Expensive toy

We got two and had to send both back because of faulty and overly noisy preamp. The form factor is cool, fit and finish great but the heart of an electric instrument is the "electric" part. This fails. The first instrument had a treble hiss that made it unusable for any critical work, the second lost the reverb function after about 6-8 practice sessions. Not what I expect from Yamaha. A couple of bucks more in the pre-amp would have made this a great choice

I'm a classical/Jazz violinist and have been playing for about 36 years. I've performed with many big name artist along with recording with some wonderful local musicians. This instrument has replaced my accoustic violin on all my jazz gigs and has turned a few heads in the process. After using my SV-120 I have found the right sound by putting a mute on the bridge to take away the tinny sound in the upper strings. The instruments playes well and the thinner neck makes it easier to shift. I'm looking to purchase one for my daughter and feel very comfortable with this product.

I have played the SV120 for 2 years. It arrived with a perfect bridge set-up. I play along with CDs of bluegass/country gospel for relaxation almost daily. Therefore the silent feature works great for privacy as it is barely audible in adjoining roooms of my house. I occassionally plug into my 15 watt Peavy Rage 158 amp, and it sounds great. When amplified, the E string does sond a little flat but not on silent headphone play. I was amazed at the ease of going from the SV120 back to my handmade acoustic violins. The only difference is the SV120 is a little heavier.I love mine.

Cool but not quite the real thing

This is a very cool instrument, it is really impressive when plugged into an effects pedal such as a PODxt Live. I use it for worship at my church, because of the great flexibilty of not having play into a microphone which is a pain. It's very solidly built, I have a black one. Of course it doesn't sound as rich as the real thing but it does have a definite cool factor. My biggest complaint is feel, I have a very nice acoustic and not to sound like a snob but the feel of the neck is a little off. It just is not as much fun to play (Unless your using pedals) because doing slightly advanced things like vibrato and trills doesn't feel right. But if you're in the market for a violin to use with you're guitar effects pedal this is the one. If you're are looking for an amp I reccomend the VOX Valvetronix which reproduces the high end really well.

Awesome violin

I use this violin to play in a rock band but I have a classical background in music. This Violin is great value for money and is great in contempory music, especialy with effects pedals but lacks the depth of tone that a acoustic can give for classical or slower songs. This violin is better than the SV 200 (the model above this one) for value but the SV 200 has an exelent tone! But overal this is a great violin!
