I've had better

I am a music education major with a concentration in percussion, and I absolutely love marching band and drum corp. I do not, however, love this snare. The obvious first reason is the price. If it sounded like the best snare in the world it would be worth it, but it doesn't, which brings me to the next issue. Second, is the sound. It is a very dull sound, even with good heads and proper tuning in relation to top and bottom head tention, as well as tuning the guts properly, it still comes across as a very dead sound, especially from the stands at any size football field. Third, it is extremely heavy, especially compare to the better sounding Pearl Championship series, or the Dynasty DFX. I definitely prefer the pearl anyday. It's price is a little bit easier on the budget, and the tone, especially from a distance, is very clear and crisp. Sharp attacks, and good, short, warm, tone, with no ill overtones to create dissonance among the drums. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My school has 4 of these Yamaha Sforzando snares, and let me tell you, they are totally worth it! They are also extremely durable. Snap a Remo White Max head on one of these babys, and you're ready to go.

Yamaha Sforzando

This drum is pretty awesome. My school uses everything yamaha. So, I bought one for myself. I love the sound of this drum. It can project so much from the middle of a football field. the rimshots just cut through the air like none other. The only thing is that, when you first get it in the box, it isn't tuned, so either tune it, or take the heads off and put new ones on. Although I found the stock heads very descent, the bottom heads could be changed. Not much wrong with it, but it can be a pain sometimes. The stock heads are made by remo, wich is cool. But if you want to change the heads I would strongly reccommend: Remo Black Max or Remo White Max as batters, and a Remo Falams II as a bottom head. The snare is so easy to take out, I play with it sometimes. Just unscrew the side on the throw-off, and pull on it from the opposite side. The nylon snare give you serious attack, too. The throw-off is rather easy to glide on and off, as well. It can handle extremely high tension, and not put too much stress on the drum shell, because the top and bottom heads pull against each other, instead of on the lugs. The only downside is that this drum is rather pricy, but it's worth every penny.
