My private teacher let me try these out and wow! I loved them from the start! The M 183 gave me the power to play a rosewood marimba with out the clunking sound of some really hard mallets. I'm getting another pair asap. You need these for sure! They have the length to fit anyones needs and they are just amazing!

Resonance and Articulation with full range.

My college drumline bought two pairs of the 183's and four pairs of the 188's last October to finish out marching season with. We were replacing the mid-range Van Sice's on marimba, which were great for indoor but not speaking on the field like we'd like, and some random Encore mallets we'd had for vibes that sounded like ice picks.

I honestly can't find too many things you can't use the 183's for. We used them on a Yamaha Acoustalon for most of the fall with great results and then I turned around and used them on a Demorrow rosewood 4.3 for Wind Ensemble and other small ensembles, utilizing the full range of the instrument, also with admirable results. Same story with the 188's: used them all year, and didn't find too much they couldn't do.

There were a couple of drawbacks though, mostly with the 183's. For one, they were a little too articulate for solo's, even for brighter solos. Also, handles on the 183's were not very resilient. One of the shafts broke after only six months, whereas I personally have mallets that I've used just as often with shafts that show nearly no wear after 2-3 years or more.

The 188's, however, I can find no fault with. We've used those in marching band, wind ensemble, small ensembles ranging 4 people to 22 people, and in solo work and had amazing results in all of them.

All in all I'd recommend both sets: they may well be the last you ever buy for ensemble use.
