I did some research for my first clarinet. I had nothing to compare, so I narrowed my choice to Selmer Prelude. I bought Vandoren V-12 2.5 reeds and a couple of mouthpieces - including Premiere by Hite and Fobes Debut. I like them both. After a week, I've developed good tone and intonation with the Prelude Clarinet. Its clearly well-made and feels great in your hands. I can do all my chromatic scales and feel really prepared to learn how to play right with formal training. I would recommend this clarinet if you've never played. I've made great progress in only two weeks - and didn't pay a fortune. Selmer is a great brand.
