Good intermediate horn, but no classic

Yesterday I played a Jupiter 893SG bari sax, for about 45 minutes. I mainly play jazz and big band music. My impression was more positive than I thought on beforehand, even if this is not a saxophone that I would buy myself. The keywork looks and feels good, and is definitely better than the keywork on older Jupiter saxes that I have seen. The balance is good, and even if the horn feels light, it does not feel flimsy. It appears well made. My biggest reservations are in the sound. While the intonation is OK, the sound lacks some character. In the lower register it doesn't have the punch that you would expect from a good bari, and from A2 up, it sounds too nasal and thin. The Jupiter doesn't deliver the power that e.g. a vintage Conn or Buescher can. It is better for orchestra work than for big band or rock. However, all in all, it looked like a very good and affordable student instrument.

Good beginning gig horn

This horn is good for the beginning gig player, but lacks a bit in quality of it's material. The metals used are thin and will eventually result in a higher cost of upkeep. Don't get it to play concert music, as it has a bit of an edge to the sound. Overall, it's good for it's price, but beware of the quality.

I have became interested in a bari sax, I have all the other sax's and I'm interested in a bari. This is the only one that I have tested and I thought that it can be a strong candidate.

Excellent response and mechanically sound.

I played the Deluxe model at a local music store and was blown away by the ease at which it played. It had volume and a big bottom end so I purchased the Artist series which has a real nice finish. I also thank Musician's Friend for having the best price on the internet!
